I've arrived at London's Heathrow Airport for my 8 hour layover.* I can't think of a better way to get to know a country than to explore its duty-free shops and candy kiosks after drinking three glasses of airport wine, so this is a great start to my international summer.
Apparently, the rules for carrying liquids on board change once you cross the Atlantic. Although you can carry on solution for hard contacts regardless of container size in the US, you can't do that here in the UK. The aviation security lady and I got into a heated argument over this. However, once I realized that she's representing a country whose greatest achievements of the past quarter century include producing Hugh Grant movies and exporting The Office to the United States, I backed down.
*Speaking of the flight, the first class section of my British Airways flight looked just like a scene out of Austin Powers. Fabulous!
